What is Cannabis?
It’s a question with various answers, but we’ll attempt to answer them all for you in this article!
So, what is cannabis?
Simply, cannabis is a plant. However, there are various types of cannabis, and no two plants are exactly alike. Cannabis has come a long way over the last hundred years, but did you know that ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Chinese enjoyed cannabis as far back as two-thousand years ago.
For a simple plant, cannabis truly does have an interesting story that’s worth telling.
Where did the cannabis plant originate?
It’s believed that the cannabis plant originally started life in Central Asia before being introduced to other continents such as Africa, Europe, and eventually the Americas. Although some plants still in circulation today closely resemble these original cannabis plants, small and dense, many other strains have evolved into much bigger plants capable of growing larger amounts of cannabis flower or bud.
Over two thousand years ago, the Egyptians and Chinese utilized cannabis in various herbal remedies and medicines and for ceremonial and recreational purposes. Since then, we have come along way, but in some respects, the original use of cannabis is still very much the same.
Cannabis plants over the last 100 years
One hundred years ago, the hemp plant was getting all the love in the cannabis plant family. Hemp is similar in appearance to marijuana but contains almost no THC. However, hemp is high in CBD and has various other purposes, including ropes, cloth, paper, fiber, oils, and much more. Both hemp and marijuana are considered to be part of the cannabis sativa plant family.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the cannabinoid responsible for the ‘euphoric high’ that many people experience when consuming marijuana products. Cannabidiol (CBD) has no psychotropic properties but is widely used by people worldwide for its potential therapeutic properties.
However, over the last decade, the legalization of both recreational and medicinal cannabis has led to a massive surge in the popularity of marijuana.
What are the different types of cannabis plants?
There are three main types of marijuana or cannabis plants that you’re going to encounter, and they are classified as strains. The three different strains are sativa, indica, and hybrid. Hybrid strains of cannabis are a combination of either sativa or indica but usually dominant in one or the other.
- Sativa – Sativa strains of marijuana usually give you an energetic and uplifting high that many people enjoy when they’re trying to be creative. If you’re looking for a strain of cannabis that doesn’t leave you tired and sleepy, then sativa dominant strains are a great place to start.
- Indica – Indica strains are better suited to people that are trying to relax or get a better night’s sleep. Typically, indica strains are going to leave you ‘couch locked’ or lying down with a bag of chips watching television. If you have a big day of activity ahead of you, it’s probably better to avoid indicas dominant strains.
